Liz has written many books about skin and nutrition over the last 20 years, and has pooled her knowledge into this one brilliant book. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone with an interest in skin, nutrition and wellness, and how they all play a part in how your skin behaves and looks.

There are some wonderful lifestyle recommendations and recipes, all geared at your skin, some of them I have reproduced on my site with kind permission from Liz.

I hope you enjoy reading Skin Secretes as much as I have!

This is a one of my favourite recipes from Liz Earle’s Skin Secrets book and is extracted from the “Skin Snacks” section, which is full of gorgeous recipes and ideas to boost your health and skin!

Beauty-Boost Bars

These terrific omega-rich energy bars are a firm favourite. I make a batch at the weekend and keep them in a sealed box in the fridge for the week ahead – perfect for a post supper sweet snack, a fast school-run breakfast in the car or for a quick energy boost when blood sugar levels dip, mid afternoon. I try to keep all these healthy staples in my cupboards, as they are useful for other recipes, too, such as home-made mueslis, biscuits and yoghurt toppings.

Here’s what you need:

50g each of dates, dried apricots, sunflowers seeds

100g raisins

100g porridge oats

30g wheatgerm

25g medium oatmeal

20g linseeds

Juice and grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon

1 tablespoon honey, preferably local

2 tablespoons cold-pressed flax or rapeseed oil, plus a drizzle to grease the tin

Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until it forms a firm dough ball. Lightly oil a 20cm loaf tin or one end of a rectangular baking dish. Press the dough into the pan to a thickness of about 2cm. Chill in the fridge for about an hour. Cut into cubes or sticks and enjoy! For a variation, try the juice and zest of an orange instead of lemon.

This is an extract from Liz Earle’s Skin Secrets book, published by Kyle Cathie, Liz has also written “Eat Yourself Beautiful” which has more skin boosting recipes for lovely skin!

Note – if you don’t like Dates or Raisins, like me, then do what I do and add extra Apricots and dried Cranberries instead of Raisins.

Liz Earle’s Eat Yourself Beautiful is the ultimate guide to health and beauty from within. This book may be quite old (1992), but it still has loads of relevent information for eating well and supporting your skin. The information is easy to understand and to put into practise, with Liz’s knowledge of food and her “You are what you eat” philosophy.

Liz Earle is a well known beauty writer and health expert and has written many books on skin and health topics, and for me a shining example of all the advise she gives on nutrition and health.

Follow some of the guidelines and recipes and you can expect -

Increased energy

Brighter, clearer skin

Shiny hair and stronger nails

Reduction in Cellulite

Weight loss and fewer food cravings

This is really a common sense eating guide and helps motivate you to make some changes in the way you eat, it also makes it clear what the good foods really are and why. My favourite section is the “Vitality vegetables” – (I love growing veg, so this interests me), it explains the nutritional content of each vegetable and what they are good for. Other topics include: Glorious Grains, Fabulous Fruits, Powerful Plant Oils and Healing Herbs. The recipes are also very useful – there are over 50, and there are ideas for breakfasts, lunches and main meals – all very healthy but delicious, my favourite recipe is the lovely Humus.

This book is no longer in print, so hunt round second hand book shops and Amazon.

I have been a follower of Liz Earle for years and read lots of her books and listened to her speak about skin care. Liz used to be a beauty editor and is passionate about educating people about their skin and what they can do to make a visible difference. Liz has written many books about skin and nutrition over the years, and has pooled her knowledge into this one brilliant book.
This is a very personal book, with photographs of her family and friends and an indispensable guide to having naturally beautiful skin. It shows Liz’s holistic approach to great skin – which I am greatly passionate about! How you eat, sleep and how you relax are just as important as how you cleanse and exfoliate! I agree with pretty much everything that is in this book and love the recipes and the skin boosting snacks! This book would make a wonderful present for anyone with an interest in skin care and health!

“For the last 25 years, I’ve been writing about and researching ways to create naturally beautiful skin. I’ve been asked many times about how you can make a visible difference to your skin, whatever your age or stage in life. From early teens, through pregnancy, mid-life, menopause and far beyond, a healthier, brighter complexion really is achievable for everyone – including men (and there are suggestions for them, too).” Liz Earle.
