Building a Solid Skincare Routine

Building a Solid Skincare Routine - Simple. Consistent. Intelligent

By Julia Hart, The Electric Facialist

Let’s strip this right back—because skincare has become far too complicated.

You do not need a 10-step routine.
You do not need to use every active ingredient under the sun.
And you definitely don’t need to confuse your skin in the name of “results.”

The best skin I see—consistently—is built on simplicity, consistency, and understanding your skin.

My Philosophy: Less, But Better

I’ve always believed that skin responds best when it feels safe, supported, and not constantly under attack.

Overloading your skin with actives, switching products too often, or chasing trends can actually create:

  • Barrier damage
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Sensitivity and reactivity
  • Accelerated ageing (yes, really)

Skin thrives on rhythm.
And rhythm comes from consistency.

The Core Routine (Non-Negotiables)

If you do nothing else—get these right.

1. Cleanse (AM + PM)

Cleansing is the foundation of everything.

In the evening, I often recommend a double cleanse:

  • First cleanse: removes makeup, SPF, pollution
  • Second cleanse: actually cleans the skin

In the morning:

  • Keep it gentle—your skin doesn’t need stripping

Your skin should feel clean, not tight.

2. Hydrate & Support (Serums / Essence)

This is where we feed the skin, not fight it.

Think:

  • Hydration
  • Barrier repair
  • Skin comfort

You don’t need five serums.
One or two well-chosen formulas is more than enough.

3. Moisturise (AM + PM)

Your moisturiser is your skin’s protection layer.

It helps:

  • Lock in hydration
  • Support barrier function
  • Keep skin resilient

If your skin barrier is happy, everything else works better.

4. SPF (AM – Always)

This is non-negotiable.

SPF is your number one anti-ageing tool.

Without it, everything else is compromised.

Where Do Actives Fit In?

This is where people go wrong.

Actives (like retinol, acids, vitamin C) are tools—not the foundation.

Used correctly, they can:

  • Stimulate collagen
  • Improve texture
  • Brighten skin

Used excessively, they can:

  • Damage your barrier
  • Create inflammation
  • Sensitise your skin long-term

My rule?
Start slow. Use intentionally. And don’t stack everything at once. Get professional recommendations for your skin.

Intuitive Skincare: Learning Your Skin

This is where your routine becomes powerful.

Intuitive skincare means:

  • Listening to your skin daily
  • Adjusting based on how it feels
  • Not blindly following a rigid routine

Some days your skin needs:

  • More hydration
  • Less stimulation
  • Simplicity

Other days it can tolerate more.

Your skin is intelligent.
It communicates constantly—you just need to pay attention.

Consistency Is Everything

This is the part no one talks about enough.

You can have the best products in the world—but if you:

  • Skip your routine
  • Change products every week
  • Only look after your skin occasionally

…you won’t see real results.

The best skin is built through:

  • Daily habits
  • Repetition
  • Long-term care

A simple routine, done consistently, will always outperform a complicated one done occasionally.

The “Less Is More” Strategy

Influencers are slowly realising this, but something I see every day in clinic:

You don’t need more products.
You need better choices and better consistency.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my skin feel calm?
  • Does it look healthy—not just “treated”?
  • Am I supporting it—or constantly pushing it?

Final Thoughts: Build, Don’t Battle Your Skin

Skincare should never feel like a war.

It should feel like:

  • Support
  • Maintenance
  • Regeneration

When you simplify your routine, stay consistent, and learn your skin…

That’s when the real transformation happens.
