Volufiline in Skincare for Restoring Facial Volume Loss

Volufiline® in Skincare: Can a Cream Help Restore Facial Volume?

By Julia Hart, The Electric Facialist

Facial ageing is not only about lines and wrinkles. Over time, changes in collagen, bone structure and the facial fat compartments can cause the cheeks to appear flatter, the under-eye area more hollow and the skin less cushioned.

This has made Volufiline® one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean skincare. It is promoted as a non-invasive way to support fuller, plumper-looking skin—but can a topical ingredient genuinely restore facial volume?

Here is what Volufiline® is, how it is proposed to work and what the available research actually tells us.

What Is Volufiline®?

Volufiline® is a patented cosmetic ingredient originally developed by French ingredient manufacturer Sederma, now part of Croda Beauty.

It combines hydrogenated polyisobutene, an emollient carrier, with an extract from the root of Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Known as Zhi Mu, this plant has a long history of use in traditional East Asian herbal practice.

Its key compound is sarsasapogenin, a plant-derived steroidal sapogenin. This oil-soluble compound is the part associated with Volufiline’s proposed plumping effect.

According to Croda Beauty, Volufiline® is designed to encourage lipid storage and adipocyte differentiation, helping treated areas appear fuller and smoother.

It is important to understand that Volufiline® is a cosmetic raw material—not a finished serum or facial oil. It should be used within a professionally formulated skincare product rather than purchased as an unverified “100% Volufiline” concentrate online.

How Is Volufiline® Proposed to Work?

Fat cells are known as adipocytes. Their size and ability to store lipids contribute to the cushioning and volume beneath the skin.

Volufiline® is proposed to work in two related ways:

  • Supporting the differentiation of precursor cells into mature adipocytes
  • Encouraging existing adipocytes to accumulate and store more lipids

In theory, this could create a subtle increase in cushioning wherever the ingredient is consistently applied.

Laboratory work referenced in the original sarsasapogenin patent reported increased adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation. However, these experiments involved ingredients being applied directly to cells under controlled laboratory conditions.

That is very different from applying a cosmetic cream to intact human skin. A topical ingredient must first pass through the skin barrier and reach the appropriate tissue in a meaningful concentration—something that has not yet been conclusively demonstrated for Volufiline®.

What Does the Research Actually Show?

The most frequently quoted human test was conducted by Volufiline’s original manufacturer rather than an independent research group.

A cream containing 5% Volufiline® was reportedly applied twice daily to one breast for 56 days. The treated side showed an average volume increase of approximately 2.2% compared with the untreated side.

This result is interesting, but it needs context:

  • The study was small and manufacturer-led
  • It was not published as a peer-reviewed facial skincare trial
  • It investigated breast tissue rather than facial volume
  • Individual results varied considerably
  • Breast volume can naturally fluctuate for several reasons

An expert review of the available evidence concluded that there is currently no credible, peer-reviewed clinical evidence showing that topical Volufiline® meaningfully increases facial fat or produces filler-like results.

There is some peer-reviewed research into sarsasapogenin itself. For example, a published animal study found that orally administered sarsasapogenin influenced inflammation and insulin signalling within adipose tissue. However, this was a metabolic study in mice—not evidence that topical Volufiline® restores lost facial volume in humans.

The honest conclusion is that the proposed mechanism is scientifically interesting, but independent facial research remains limited.

Is Volufiline® “Filler in a Bottle”?

No. Volufiline® should not be compared directly with injectable dermal filler or facial fat grafting.

Dermal filler physically places a controlled amount of material beneath the skin at a specific depth. A cosmetic cream cannot provide the same immediate, structural or predictable change.

A well-formulated Volufiline® product may still help skin appear:

  • More cushioned and supple
  • Smoother and better hydrated
  • Subtly fuller-looking
  • Firmer and more resilient
  • Less creased through improved skin comfort

Some of this visible improvement may come from Volufiline® itself, while some may result from the oils, humectants, peptides and barrier-supporting ingredients used alongside it.

I would therefore view Volufiline® as a supportive age-management ingredient, not a replacement for professional volumising treatments.

Who May Benefit from Volufiline® Skincare?

Volufiline® may be worth exploring if you are beginning to notice:

  • Mild loss of facial cushioning
  • Flatter-looking cheeks
  • Reduced firmness or elasticity
  • Fine lines associated with dryness
  • Skin that appears thinner or less resilient
  • Changes in facial fullness following ageing or weight loss

Expectations should remain realistic. Significant hollowness, deeper structural changes and advanced facial volume loss cannot be corrected with skincare alone.

Extra caution is also sensible around the eyes. Under-eye hollowness and under-eye bags are very different concerns, and a product intended to promote fullness may not be appropriate where fatty bags are already present. Only use a formulation around the eyes if it is specifically designed and labelled for that area.

Volufiline® in the Miracletox Turnover Collection

The Miracletox Turnover range combines Volufiline® with peptides, ceramides, hydration and Korean botanical complexes, allowing it to support overall skin quality rather than relying on one ingredient alone.

Miracletox Turnover Unit Feel Cream

The Miracletox Turnover Unit Feel Cream is the easiest way to introduce Volufiline® into a regular routine.

It combines Volufiline® with peptides, five ceramides, hyaluronic acid, AQUAXYL™, niacinamide and the antioxidant-rich RED 6 Flower Complex. The result is a nourishing cream-gel designed to support a plumper appearance while improving hydration, barrier strength and visible firmness.

Apply it as the final moisturising step after your toner and serum.

Miracletox Turnover Unit TOX Ampoule

For a more intensive treatment, the Miracletox Turnover Unit TOX Ampoule combines approximately 5% Volufiline® with 14 peptides and patented Microspear® technology.

This once-weekly Korean liquid microneedling treatment is designed to target visible loss of firmness, elasticity and facial cushioning while refining texture and radiance.

Because it contains Microspears®, it should be used according to the supplied instructions. Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids and other active skincare ingredients for 72 hours after treatment.

How Long Does Volufiline® Take to Work?

Volufiline® is not an instant volumiser. The manufacturer’s human testing assessed results over 56 days, so any potential change should be judged over approximately eight weeks of consistent use.

Take photographs in the same position and lighting before beginning. This makes it easier to separate genuine gradual improvement from changes caused by hydration, lighting or facial expression.

As independent evidence is limited, there is no guarantee that every user will experience a visible increase in fullness.

The Verdict

Volufiline® is a fascinating ingredient with a plausible laboratory mechanism and some preliminary manufacturer-led results. However, the social-media description of it as a topical filler moves considerably faster than the science.

Used within a sophisticated formula, it may help skin look smoother, softer, more cushioned and subtly fuller. Its greatest value may come when it is combined with peptides, ceramides and hydrating ingredients that improve the overall quality and resilience of the skin.

For anyone experiencing early facial volume loss, Volufiline® is an interesting non-invasive option to explore—with patience, consistency and realistic expectations.
